silverwitch: Danu's Dance

silverwitch:

Warm and moist beneath the hill
voices and laughter are soft and shrill
glints of light and shadows long move
& merrying the long night thru
Danu’s children in morning emerge anew

Slumber and waking each in their time
music and laughter interlace and combine
earnest crafts folk of diminutive size
dance with creativity before the eyes
and tumbling out the treasures come

The land is quiet and still above
no hint of the secrets within the hill
honey flows and mead is good
this place between, below & above
the magic is and always was

Words are treasures polished bright
poems by day and rhythms by night
interlaces adorn each glowing page
painted in berry juice, pollen & gall
words slide into being for one and all

Words of Danu, Druids and Sages
thoughts and truths for the coming ages
never a care or woe is penned here
the land above is sleepwalking near
beneath the hill each word is dear
Warm and moist beneath the hill
voices and laughter are seldom still
glints of light and flashes of fire glow
open secrets all the wee folks know
Danu’s children are spun of light

PRIMAL VIBRATION

In ancient times sound itself, the very basis of all music, was thought to be intimately related in some way to non-physical or sacred dimensions or planes of existence. Why was this? Because audible sound was considered to be but an earthly reflection of a vibratory activity taking place beyond the physical world. This vibration was more fundamental„ and nearer to the heart of the meaning of things, than any audible sound. Inaudible to the human ear, this Cosmic Vibration was the origin and basis of all the matter and energy in the universe.

In it’s purest and most indifferential form, it was known to the Hindus as OM. Yet, just as pure white light differentiates into the colours of the rainbow, so this Primal Vibration was believed to differentiate into a number of more greatly defined superphysical vibrations. These different frequencies or Cosmic Tones were thought to be present in varying combinations throughout the universe. Not only were they present within all substances and forms, in different vibratory combinations, but they were the substances and forms. According to the combination of Cosmic Tones present within any given area or space, so was the nature of the substance within that space determined.

And thus we find ourselves throwing light upon the widely-held belief that all matteris composed of one basic substance or energy. According to the great thinker of old, this energy was vibration. In modern times, the physical sciencesare now arricing back at this original point of departure. Once again, science is beginning to suspect that matter is all composed of one fundamental something, and that the frequencies or rhythms of this something determine the specific nature of each object or atom

The universal vibratory energies were called by the ancient Egyptians the Word or Words of their gods; to Pythagoreans of Greece they were the Music of the Spheres; and to the ancient Chineseknew them to be celestial energies of perfect harmony. The Cosmic Tones, as differentiations of the OM, were the most powerful force in the universe, according to the ancient, for these tones were the universe - the very source of creation itself.

And herein lay the vast significance of all audible, earthly sound, such as are produced by the performing of music and the uttering of speech .For audible sound was believed to be a ‘reflection’ , within the world of matter, of the Cosmic Tones. Audible sound itself, which is taken so much for granted today, was in those days thought to contain within itself something of the enormous Creative, Preservative and Destructive force of the Cosmic Tones themselves. The very phenomenon of sound was regarded with great reverence. He who knew how to could release sacred energies through the use of audible sound, and thereby wield a mighty power. And, in fact, specific knowledge was not necessarily required, for something of the mighty energies of the Primal Vibration was believed to be released whenever and wherever audible sound was produced . According to the nature of the audible sound, so would it’s hidden effetcs be determined

David Tame - The Secret Power of Music

I very much recommend this book
I reposted this as a quote, instead of a photo so it was more readable. I’m also tagging it for the Pagan Study Group because the nature of (musical) vibrations is a very worthwhile addition, if not essential (as I see it) to any magickal/spiritual study. Plus, it’s just fascinating!

If the Universal is Mental in its nature, then Mental Transmutation must be the art of CHANGING THE CONDITIONS OF THE UNIVERSE, along the lines of Matter, Force and Mind. So you see, therefore, that Mental Transmutation is really the “Magic” of which the ancient writers had so much to say in their mystical works, and about which they gave so few practical instructions

Wherever sympathetic magic occurs in its pure unadulterated form, it is assumed that in nature one event follows another necessarily and invariably without the intervention of any spiritual or personal agency. Thus its fundamental conception is identical with that of modern science; underlying the whole system is a faith, implicit but real and firm, in the order and uniformity of nature. The magician does not doubt that the same causes will always produce the same effects, that the performance of the proper ceremony accompanied by the appropriate spell, will inevitably be attended by the desired results, unless, indeed, his incantations should chance to be thwarted and foiled by the more potent charms of another sorcerer. He supplicates no higher power: he sues the favour of no fickle and wayward being: he abases himself before no awful deity. Yet his power, great as he believes it to be, is by no means arbitrary and unlimited. He can wield it only so long as he strictly conforms to the rules of his art, or to what may be called the laws of nature as conceived by {IX} him. To neglect these rules, to break these laws in the smallest particular is to incur failure, and may even expose the unskilful practitioner himself to the utmost peril. If he claims a sovereignty over nature, it is a constitutional sovereignty rigorously limited in its scope and exercised in exact conformity with ancient usage. Thus the analogy between the magical and the scientific conceptions of the world is close. In both of them the succession of events is perfectly regular and certain, being determined by immutable laws, the operation of which can be foreseen and calculated precisely; the elements of caprice, of chance, and of accident are banished from the course of nature. Both of them open up a seemingly boundless vista of possibilities to him who knows the causes of things and can touch the secret springs that set in motion the vast and intricate mechanism of the world. Hence the strong attraction which magic and science alike have exercised on the human mind; hence the powerful stimulus that both have given to the pursuit of knowledge. They lure the weary enquirer, the footsore seeker, on through the wilderness of disappointment in the present by their endless promises of the future: they take him up to he top of an exceeding high mountain and shew him, beyond the dark clouds and rolling mists at his feet, a vision of the celestial city, far off, it may be, but radiant with unearthly splendour, bathed in the light of dreams.

We Are Thoroughly Attached to Life, by D.

A spontaneous essay on balance, yin/yang, the importance of death, and applying hermetic principles to life choices, as it relates to my views on veganism within the spiritual community, etc.

I know most of you just scrolled right by it, when I posted it yesterday, but I’d really appreciate your thoughts and views on it.

These things are of significant importance to me. Please give it a read and let me know what you think.

Torches for Hecate

One of the tale tale signs for Hekate / Hecate is her association with torches. In many engravings, pictures and paintings Hekate / Hecate is depicted with her twin torches, many times using them to illuminate the way as she leads Persephone and Demeter from the underworld. Many times if one is in doubt look to see if there are two torches and it becomes a prime item for identification. Other times holding them as she stands in her tri-formus shape in some piece of statuary.

Yet is it as reliable as an identifier as some might think or suggest?

On the surface it might seem a good call but Hekate / Hecate is not the only goddess to be depicted with torches. The goddesses Artemis and Diana are also both frequently depicted with torches. Therein lies part of the difficulty in stating a goddess is probably Hekate / Hecate due to the association of torches in an image, especially if the depiction shows two torches. Further complicated due to the sharing of attributes between the three.

For Diana the display is normally a bit easier to identify. When she is being displayed as Diana Lucifera (Bringer of Light) it’s usually depicted as a single torch with a long handle. The overall impression almost seemingly to show her carrying a spear vice a torch. Many examples of this pose being engraved on coins of Rome.

http://www.numispedia.de/Thema:G%F6t…zen%2C_Apollon

where it can be a bit of an issue are on coins or images that depict Diana as the Huntress and include her usage of a spear vice the normal usage of Bow and Arrows. While not exceptionally wide spread or common in usage it is displayed on some coins and referenced in some writings.

Like Diana Artemis to is depicted with both Spear and torch (s) on various coins, engravings and carvings. While the depiction with a spear is unusual for the most part she is frequently depicted with one when portrayed by her Aetolian references.

When depicted with torches it’s usually a singular long shafted torch similar to depictions of Diana Lucifera. In such instances it’s relatively easy to separate her from Hecate / Hekate. Yet at times Artemis is depicted with twin torches which resemble the imagery of Hecate / Hekate. Short handled torches being the significant point of comparison between the two.

http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/Mythol…ndArtemis.html

http://bp1.blogger.com/_TV2FRP479Ag/…-h/1600169.jpg

While most items from antiquity show Hekate / Hecate bearing two short handled torches one finds many current depictions of her with two long handled torches. Torches that seem to be as tall as the image portrayed of Hekate / Hecate herself. While some engraving or carvings give the impression of long torches compared to the imagery they are seen as short handled torches for the most part.

I have intentionally omitted modern renditions of each of the goddesses discussed here. To establish a historical basis they did not have the antiquity and common cultural application desired to show the comparison.

So while the torch is a critical item of identification for Hekate / Hecate one must look beyond that singular item to determine if it is in fact her. When Hekate / Hecate is displayed near or alongside Artemis the identification becomes easier, such as displayed on the Pergamum Wall.
